In response to the overwhelming support from friends and fans alike to the death of Social Distortion guitarist Dennis Danell, a benefit concert has been scheduled to honor his memory and support his family.
The concert event, WHEN THE ANGELS SING - A BENEFIT FOR THE FAMILY OF DENNIS DANELL, will take place at Irvine Meadows Amphitheater in Irvine, California on May 6, 2000. Tickets for the event go on sale at 10:00am on Saturday, April 8th and are $30.00. All of the proceeds from the event will go to the Danell family.
Scheduled to perform are: The Offspring, X (the original lineup), Pennywise, T.S.O.L., Punk Rock Karaoke, Strung Gurus and Rock Star Barbeque. More bands will be announced. There will also be a special musical appearance from the members of Social Distortion.
Says Social Distortion's Mike Ness, "Music was our common thread. Doing this benefit show is a way for me to say goodbye to Dennis in my own way. We were as close as family and it means so much to me to play this benefit for his wife and children. I want to thank the other bands involved for taking the time to join Social Distortion in honoring him. Although it will be difficult to be on stage without him, his spirit will be felt."
"Social Distortion has been influencing my life for almost 20 years. Their impact on the punk scene has been invaluable. Dennis may have left this earth and will be greatly missed by many, but his music and spirit will live on forever," says Pennywise guitarist Fletcher Dragge.
Danell, the 38-year-old guitarist for punk band Social Distortion, died of natural causes on Tuesday, February 29, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Christie, 3 year-old son and 6 month-old daughter.
Danell, a founding member of Social Distortion, enjoyed a prosperous recording career with the band since its inception in 1979. Over his 20 years as their guitarist and backing vocalist, Danell lent his gritty, high-octane style to the band, making him an integral link in the Social Distortion sound. With Social Distortion, Danell's album credits include Mainliner (1981), Mommy's Little Monster (1982), the punk rock documentary film Another State Of Mind (1982), Prison Bound (1985), Social Distortion (1990), Somewhere Between Heaven And Hell (1992), White Light, White Heat, White Trash (1996) and Live At The Roxy (1998).
On break from Social Distortion since the release of the live album, Danell was busy recording local Orange County bands in Social D's long time recording studio, Casbah in Fullerton.
